Lesson Two
A Corpus-Based Listening Course
Rationale
Lessons 2-4 are designed as the second part of the introductory session in this course. We will utilize three lessons to introduce the pronunciation features of various English accents based on Kachru’s three-circle model (1985). In these lessons, students will learn about common features of different English accents to prepare for later parts of the course, where they will extract specific information from recordings featuring speakers with various accents. Before discussing accent features, we will define the three circles: Inner circle, Outer circle, and Expanding circle. Following this, we will select countries from each circle that exemplify significant and representative accent features, based on a literature review. Throughout these demonstrations, we will use videos and audio samples to help students understand the nuanced differences among various English accents.
